Building a data warehouse for Rail Projects Victoria.

Rail Projects Victoria (RPV) engaged Data Agility to support them to build a data warehouse in Azure that would allow them to share their data with stakeholders and contractors and provide them with a single source of truth across all of their infrastructure projects.

Overview

Rail Projects Victoria (RPV) is the Victorian Government body responsible for the delivery of Geelong Fast Rail, Melbourne Airport Rail, Regional Rail Revival, Sunbury Line Upgrade, Western Rail Plan, and the Metro Tunnel Project, which will bring more trains, more often, to and from suburbs across Melbourne with a less crowded and more reliable rail network.

RPV is responsible for overseeing all stages of the projects it delivers. Their responsibilities include project planning and development, site investigations, stakeholder engagement, planning approvals and procurement, through to construction delivery and project commissioning.

They work with a team of highly experienced engineers, planners, cost control employees and contractors from across the public and private sectors to ensure the objectives of the projects are achieved for the Victorian community. In addition, they utilise the support from external expert advisors.

Challenge

​RPV needed a solution that would report on project data that could be used by multiple stakeholders.

RPV required a solution to enable it to report on the data relating to rail infrastructure projects being delivered across Victoria. This data is generated and used by RPV, project stakeholders and construction contractors.

RPV wanted a solution that provided a single source of truth across all of its rail infrastructure projects undertaken in Victoria, with data and reports shared between RPV, stakeholders and contractors, with appropriate security and access in place. They engaged Data Agility to support them with this project.

Solution

Data Agility developed the solution architecture, and worked together with RPV staff to build the data warehouse and developed dashboards using Microsoft technologies.

As a first step, we worked collaboratively with RPV to develop the solution architecture for the data warehouse to ensure it would provide the right solution for RPV’s needs.

Following the approval of the solution architecture, we worked with RPV’s data warehouse team to build the data warehouse using a range of Azure technologies including Functions, Data Factory, Blog Storage, Sequel Database and SQL Space Database. This was delivered using the Agile methodology.

A range of dashboards and reports have been developed and delivered using Microsoft Power BI. Working very closely with business users, these have provided to RPV a range of reports for use by internal and external stakeholders and contractors.

This also solved the problem they had previously faced in providing an easier mechanism to share their data adequately with those who needed it across all projects.

Results

RPV have a data warehouse that services their needs, the needs of their stakeholders and allows them to share their data with internal and external stakeholders and contractors.

Data Agility has been able to provide a solution that will enable RPV to continue to support the wide range of projects they are currently undertaking.

We were able to support them with a solution that now provides a single source of truth across all of its rail infrastructure projects being undertaken in Victoria.

The data and reports can now be shared across RPV and contractors, with appropriate security and access in place.
